Heavy haulage is an essential part of numerous industries, particularly those that involve large-scale construction, infrastructure development, and energy production. Heavy haulage operations in Tier 1 high stakes projects demand services that can guarantee efficient and timely work. With years of experience and expertise in managing heavy and over-dimension ventures, including transport, lifting, installation, and storage, ODLS has completed numerous projects across industries in Australia. We are one of the highly trusted names in the industry.

Let’s explore some of ODLS’s most notable projects, highlighting our expertise in handling oversized equipment for transport, lifting, installation, and other operations.

Transporting Transformers for Energy Projects

One of ODLS’s major accomplishments is in the energy sector, where they transported and installed heavy transformers for significant projects. Due to their size, weight and remote locations, the transportation of transformers requires meticulous planning. ODLS successfully manages the logistics time and time again, ensuring that these transformers are delivered and installed safely and on time.

General Project Overview: ODLS handles the transformers from end to end, receiving off ships hook, placing to laydown at wharf (or other storage), transporting and placing onto final location. This work is completed for Renewable Projects, Energy plants and to maintain the existing power network ensuring that these crucial components reach their destination without incident. This involves specialized equipment and experienced personnel who manage the complex operation of moving heavy, valuable electrical equipment.

Challenges: The primary challenges include navigating through urban and remote locations with oversized loads, managing road closures, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders and third party providers to avoid disruptions. All while keeping safety as a central concern, both in terms of protecting the equipment and ensuring the safety of personnel and the public.

Outcome: ODLS’s precise planning and execution results in the successful installation of transformers, enabling the energy projects to proceed without delays. Their expertise ensures minimal disruption to the public and reduced the risk of incidents, showcasing their capability in handling such complex projects.

Humelink

ODLS is currently undertaking a key role in the Transgrid Humelink Project designed to reinforce the transmission network in southern NSW to improve the flow of electricity between new generation sources and the state’s major demand centres.

Project overview: The Humelink Project will connect Wagga Wagga, Bannaby and Maragle. It is one of the state’s largest energy infrastructure projects, with about 360km of proposed new transmission lines, and new or upgraded infrastructure at the three substation locations. The project will increase the amount of electricity that can be delivered to customers across the National Electricity Market, while also supporting the renewable energy transition in the region.

Challenges: With 24 transformers over 135T arriving in the country, vessel discharge and management of set down and storage of main tanks with multiple B-Double loads of accessories each is a mammoth logistical challenge. The Project team then mobilizes and onboards staff and equipment to a highly complex compliance environment given the involvement of three major interested parties. While the deliveries are “business as usual” for our transport and unloading crew, the mountainous locations are keeping site staff at high attention levels throughout.

Outcome: ODLS has now delivered multiple Transformers to each of the locations and once again proven their ability to provide a seamless operation, both safe and efficient. The project teams flexibility and attention to detail offering the best possible outcome to the Humelink Project.

Buronga Energy Connect Project

ODLS played a vital role in the Buronga Energy Connect Project, a major initiative aimed at improving Australia’s energy infrastructure. The project involved the transportation and installation of heavy electrical components, requiring expert handling and coordination.

Project Overview: The Buronga Energy Connect Project involved constructing a major electricity transmission line, and ODLS transported essential components to the site. This project was critical in enhancing the reliability of the energy supply across the region.

Challenges: The transportation of heavy electrical components over long distances posed logistical challenges, including route planning, obtaining necessary permits, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. ODLS had to work closely with authorities to manage road usage and ensure the safe passage of oversized loads.

Outcome: ODLS’s involvement was crucial to the successful execution of the Buronga Energy Connect Project. Their ability to manage complex logistics and ensure the timely delivery of components helped keep the project on schedule, contributing to the overall success of the energy infrastructure upgrade.

Bulk Rail discharge and delivery

ODLS has the specific know how to accept and move bulk rail over 25m long without the need to flood the wharf area with many extendable vehicles. Designing a staging system and gaining transport approvals to allow continuous flow of rail between ships hook and final storage location.

Project overview: ODLS accepts shipment of over 7,000T of steel pieces used in Train and Tram rail from ships hook and utilizes staging equipment, platform trailer and Reachstacker to unload and place into storage bays.

Challenges: To devise a method of transport and unload which would not slow the ships crane in the unload process. To gain the Authority approvals to carry out the task and gain operational efficiencies over the 15 years involvement in this project.

Outcome: ODLS has positioned itself as the sole provider of this service and works closely with the Customer and Port Authority to ensure all levels of safety and compliance are met while also providing the most cost effective solution.

Moving Heavy Mining Equipment

ODLS also has a strong presence in the mining industry, where it has been involved in the transportation of heavy mining equipment. These projects often involve moving oversized machinery across long distances to remote mining sites.

Project Overview: ODLS provided its services to transport heavy mining equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, and drilling rigs. These projects required detailed planning and coordination to handle the sheer size and weight of the equipment.

Challenges: The challenges included navigating through rough terrains, managing long-haul routes, and ensuring the safety of the equipment and personnel. ODLS had to work closely with mining companies to understand their specific needs and tailor the transportation process accordingly.

Outcome: ODLS’s successful handling of these projects demonstrated their capability to manage heavy haulage in the demanding environment of the mining industry. Their ability to deliver equipment on time and in perfect condition helped mining operations proceed without delays, contributing to the industry’s productivity.

ODLS’s involvement in these diverse projects across various industries underscores its expertise in heavy haulage projects. From energy to infrastructure and mining, ODLS has proven its capability to handle complex logistical challenges with precision and reliability. Its focus on safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction has made it a trusted partner in the heavy haulage industry.
